* Biografía
política de Awni al-Kalamyi
Awni al-Kalamyi
nació en Bagdad en 1941. Cursó la carrera militar
tras graduarse en 1959. Desde 1962 es miembro del Buró
Político del Movimiento Socialista Árabe (organización
histórica iraquí y árabe nacionalista, laica
y progresista).

The occupation is illegal
To resist is a right
Toward the creation of a unified,
democratic front of resistance in Iraq
Tour of Spain by Awni al-Kalamyi*,
Iraqi Patriotic Alliance
CSCAweb (www.nodo50.org/csca),
1st March, 2004
Translated from Spanish: Donald Murphy
Coinciding with the first anniversary
of the invasion and occupation of Iraq, the Arab Cause Solidarity
Committee (ACSC), within the framework of the Spanish Campaign
Against the Occupation and For the Sovereignty of Iraq (SCOSI),
has organised a tour of Spain -Barcelona, Madrid, Gijón,
Alicante, Bilbao and Pamplona- by Awni al-Kalemyi, Iraqi and
spokesperson for the Iraqi Patriotic Alliance (IPA).
The IPA is a coalition of political
organizations from the nationalist and patriotic Iraqi opposition,
established in 1992 to combat the process of foreign intervention
in Iraq being carried out through war and through the system
of sanctions imposed by the United Nations Security Council since
1990. In 2001, before the invasion and occupation plans designed
to bring about "regime change" in Iraq to lead to a
renewed process of re-colonizing the country through direct military
occupation, the IPA established a common front, both inside and
outside Iraq, to favour the return of his leaders to the country
for the mobilisation of their bases within Iraqi territory and
for calling to collective and popular resistance to the imminent
threat of US invasion. The IPA also promoted a process of internal
democratic transformation that allowed the mobilization of its
bases against the US invasion and in the interest of national
resistance. As a result of this process, the Iraqi regime would
engaged in late 2002 to modify laws pertaining to the press and
to political parties, as a sign of the beginning of a process
of political transformation as demanded by the IPA at a time
of national emergency in the interest of collective homeland
defence. In such a juncture, the ACSC invited to Madrid, on February,
2003, Abdel Jabar al-Kubaisy, baasist disident and member of
the IPA.
Since the invasion and occupation
of Iraq of March-April 2003, the IPA has become a political referent
of the Iraqi resistance which rejects the occupation and those
projects associated with it; i.e. the promotion of a future Iraq
divided along religious and ethnic criteria. US is trying to
end with the potential acquired by the State of Iraq since its
population carried out the republican Revolution of 1958, putting
an end to British colonial tutelage and laying the foundations
for a State defined by an independent national project and of
social use of its resources. In bitter contrast to such aspirations,
the occupation has returned Iraq to the colonial era, associated
now with the political, economic, military, social and ideological
controls of US imperialism, and through it, with the powerful
corporate interests of international globalized capitalism. At
the same time, the occupation of Iraq has strengthened the objectives
of Israeli hegemony and Zionism in the country and in the entire
Arab region.
Toward a unified, democratic
Front of Resistance in Iraq
Rejecting the occupation and
reaffirming the Iraqi people's legitimate and unalienable right
to resist the occupation by all possible means, the IPA is playing
an essential role within Iraq to promote a Unified Political
Front of Resistance which would bring together all sectors and
resistance currents combating the occupation forces, and specially
the collaborationist puppet organism, the Iraqi Governing Council,
whose members are hand-picked by proconsul Bremer and groomed
by Washington, albeit without this bestowing upon them the least
shred of legitimacy in the eyes of the Iraqi People. This Unified
Political Front of Resistance should set up from plural and integrating
principles, emphasizing that the liberation process against occupation
has to preserve the social and democratic original contents of
the Iraqi national project.
The Iraqi resistance has got to spoil US plans in Iraq. For months
now, the IPA has been claiming the International Movement Against
the War the necessity of moving forward in its commitment to
the Iraqi people -so widely demonstrated in the massive anti-war
demonstrations which took place last year all around the world-
by recognizing and supporting they right to resist occupation,
in the framework of a unitary, popular, democratic national liberation
process.
* A political biography
of Awni al-Kalamyi
Awni
al-Kalamyi was born in Baghdad in 1941, and began his military
career after finishing studies in 1959. Since 1962 he has been
a member of the Political Bureau of the Arab Socialist Movement
(a long-standing, secular and progressive Iraqi-Arab nationalist
organization). He fled Iraq to Syria after participating in the
attempted coup against Saddam Hussein. In Syria he became a leader
of the Democratic Patriotic Front for the overthrow of Saddam
Hussein's government. He left Syria at the end of 1988 due to
differences of opinion over the Iran-Iraq War. Syria backed Iran
while opponents of the Iraqi regime exiled in Syria (Arab socialists,
nationalists, dissident Ba'athists, Kurds and sectors of the
Communist Party which had broken ties with their leaders, etc.)
positioned themselves in favour of Iraq. Al-Kalamyi then took
up residence in Denmark under political refugee status. After
the war against Iraq in 1991, he participated along with Iraqi
leaders of diverse political views in the formation of the Patriotic
Alliance of the Iraqi Opposition which, upon its creation in
June of 1992, chose him as one of their spokespersons.
