Emma Bonino convoca para el próximo día
29 de noviembre en el Parlamento Europeo un
DIA INTERNACIONAL CONTRA LA MUTILACIÓN GENITAL FEMENINA

Recientemente he propuesto una ponencia al Parlamento Europeo, junto con otros/as colegas del Grupo Radical, denunciando el dramático tema de las mutilaciones genitales femeninas. Esta ponencia ha sido firmada por 318 de los 626 Miembros.

Considerando el creciente interes que provoca este argumento en los círculos políticos y en la sociedad civil de numerosos paises europeos y africanos, hemos decidido organizar un Dia Internacional Contra las Mutilaciones Genitales Femeninas, al que tenemos el placer de invitaros, el 29 de Noviembre del 2000, dentro del mismo Parlamento Europeo en Bruselas (salas PHS 7C50
- edificio Paul-Henri Spaak).

El programa provisional incluye: en la mañana (9:30 a 13: 00 horas), informes y testimonios presentados por personas directamente envueltas en el tema y, por la tarde, una reunion con la prensa internacional (15:30 - 16:30 horas) y un debate entre oradores y representantes de diversas ONGs y Organizaciones pro Derechos Humanos (16:30 - 19:00 horas). Hasta el momento, las
siguientes personas han confirmado su participación, como informantes / informadoras/es y testigos: Olayinka Koso-Thomas (doctora nigeriana, Presidente en Sierra Leona del Comité Inter-Africano sobre las Practicas Tradicionales, activo en 28 paises africanos); Bochra Belhaj (Presidenta de la Asociación Tunecina de Mujeres Democráticas); Mohamed Aden Sheik (cirujano,
previamente Ministro de Salud en Somalia, ahora Canciller en Turin); Kady Koita (de Senegal, lider del Grupo pro Abolición de las Mutilaciones Sexuales) y Linda Weil-Curiel (abogada francesa, co-fundadora de la Comisión por la Abolición de las Mutilaciones Sexuales).

Espero verles en Bruselas el 29 de Noviembre, para poder contribuir al exito de esta iniciativa.

I have recently tabled in the European Parliament, together with other colleagues of the Radical Group, a motion for resolution denouncing the dramatic question of female genital mutilations which has been signed by 318 out of the 626 Members.

Considering the growing interest that this argument aouses in the political circles and in the civil society of numerous european and african countries, we decided to organize on the 29th November 2000, within the European Parliament in Brussels (room PHS 7C50 - Paul-Henri Spaak building), an International Day against female genital mutilations to which I have the pleasure to invite you.

The provisional program plans, in the morning (9.30-13), reports and testimonies presented by personalities directly involved in this matter and, in the afternoon, a meeting with the international press (15.30-16.30) and a debate between the orators and the representatives of many NGOs and Human Rights Organizations (16.30-19). The  following persons have already confirmed their participation as rapporteurs - eye witnesses: Mrs Olayinka Koso-Thomas (nigerian doctor, President of the Sierra Leone’s section of the IAF – Inter-African Committee on Traditional Practices -, active in 28 african countries), Mrs Bochra Belhaj (President of the ATFD, Tunisian Association of Democratic Women), Mr Mohamed Aden Sheik (surgeon, former somali Health Minister, now town councillor in Turin), Mrs Kady Koïta (Senegalese, leader of the GAMS, Group for the Abolition of Sexual Mutilations) and Mrs Linda Weil-Curiel (french lawier, co-founder of the CAMS, Commission for the abolition of sexual mutilations).
