Muchos Roma, inspirados a menudo por nuestro propio revolucionario Helios Gómez, participaron desde los primeros combates abiertos contra el fascismo en la guerra civil española.

Gómez vio la lucha en términos de una cuestión más amplia, que habría de determinar el destino de los Roma por todas partes - en Europa, en Rusia y Asia central y en Sur y Norteamérica. Recordamos el Holocausto, pero los peores actos continuados de violencia racial desde 1990 se pasan por alto a menudo: La 'limpieza étnica' al por mayor de 120.000 Roma de Kosovo, pogroms numerosos en Rumania, Hungría, Bulgaria, la república checa y Eslovaquia, y en España también, son de hecho ignorados por el mundo.

Inspirados por la inauguración este año del Museo del Holocausto Roma, en Moscú, y de las Ceremonias del Río en 2002, se ha propuesto que llevamos a cabo un Día Mundial de la Conmemoración el:

DOMINGO 1 de Agosto de 2004

Esto coincide con el 60º aniversario del asesinato de los 3.000 presos finales Roma en Auschwitz Zigeunerlager (la noche del 2 y 3 de agosto l944).

Ya los acontecimientos para marcar esta CONMEMORACIÓN DE LAS VÍCTIMAS de ROMA se están planeando en las ciudades siguientes: BELGRADO

COMMEMORATION OF ROMA VICTIMS OF THE FASCIST FRANCO IN SPAIN How many Roma were murdered by the fascists during the Franco era?

Is it time we remembered these crimes and Commemorated our dead, with fill honours?

Many Roma, inspired often by our own revolutionary Helios Gomez, participated in in the first open combat with fascism in the Spanish Civil War.

Gomes saw the struggle in terms of a wider issue which would determine the fate of Roma everywhere - in Europe, in Russia and Central Asia and in South and North America.

He helped to create the beginnings of a Romani movement and in an interview with Cronica said:
'...from this war, which will produce so many great things, there must come even in Spain the vindication of the Roma.'

EVERYWHERE ROMA ARE STILL VICTIMS OF RACISM In the Spanish Civil War, under Franco, throughout the Third Reich and Occupied Europe, Roma were murdered for reasons of race and far-right politics.

We remember the Holocaust, but the continued acts of racial violence, worse since 1990, are often overlooked. The wholesale ethnic-cleansing of 120,000 Roma from Kosovo, numerous pogroms in Romania, Hungary, Bulgaria, the Czech Republic and Slovakia, and in Spain too, are ignored by the world.

Our people, including notable personalities in Spain and South America, are saying the time has come to Commemorate all the Roma Victims.

Let us join together in our mourning and honour of our dead - paying our respects with flowers and candles. And through this Commemoration help to awaken concern for past and present injustices, which still need urgently to be addressed.

COMMEMORATION DAY

Inspired by the opening this year of the Roma Holocaust Museum in Moscow and the River Ceremonies in 2002, it has been proposed that we hold a worldwide Commemoration Day on: SUNDAY, 1 August 2004

This coincides with the 60th Anniversary of the murder of the final 3,000 Roma prisoners in the Auschwitz Zigeunerlager (night of 2 and 3 August l944).

Already events to mark this COMMEMORATION OF ROMA VICTIMS are being planned in the following cities:

EVENTS IN SPAIN

If you are considering such events, please, bear in mind that it will be necessary first to compile a list with some brief details (and photographs where possible) of the Roma victims of fascism under Franco.

This list and the information, hopefully with some photographs, can then be distributed to all the cities around the world were the Commemorations are taking place. This way the Spanish Roma victims will be remembered and honoured together with the others by Romani communities in Europe, in North and South America and Asia by the Roma nation as one.
