What's Happening in Oaxaca? is a presentation that brings together the experiences of several Canadians travelling in solidarity with the Popular Assembly of the People of Oaxaca and the Popular Indigenous Council of Oaxaca "Ricardo Flores Magon" in the state of Oaxaca Mexico.
In the midst of profound change in Mexico, triggered by the attempts to disqualify Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador from the federal elections and then the accusations of fraud in the election of Felipe Calderón, the state of Oaxaca is emerging as a crisis point for the nation. Beginning with the teacher's strike in the spring of this year, a popular movement to eject the current governor Ulises Ruiz
is now in full swing with a Popular Assembly (APPO) convened and the capital city the site of extensive protests and peaceful occupations. The state and federal governments are responding with repression and violence to a degree not seen in Oaxaca for decades, even as the federal government plays a good cop/bad cop role.
Come out and learn about the situation from people who have been involved in or supported actions in Oaxaca City and travelled out to surrounding Zapotec, Mixe and other indigenous communities. How are people organizing? What are their goals? What possibilities lie in the midst of this movement? What can we learn in Canada from all of this?
